Hello something about me Since i was working on an uniform (photoshop shirt , jacket and stuff is allready done) I wanted to add a hat and shoulder bars for it. i was allready building stuff like belts and other objects also added some textures but it was more simple. And here s where my problem is. Lets start with something simple i would like to build. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FIRST QUESTION (shoulder bar) http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/6760/beispielbb7.jpgAs you can see on this pic showing a shoulder bar i bought (came with an uniform) Ressing a box like creator did wouldn't be a problem. But adding the texture and ""placing it on right position"" i always had some problems with. how would i make one like this? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SECOND QUESTION (hat) http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/5478/beispielhutwu9.jpgi would love to build a hat like this the front of it has a nice "shiny"? texture How would you start? ty for the help

The shoulder bars you could make like that. You just need one with an alpha channel transparency for the rounded bit. Then apply it to only the top with the "Select Texture" option in the edit window. The rest of the faces get a full alpha transparency texture.
For the hat you do the same thing (Select Texture), only select just the bill surface and apply shinny to that texture.
But in all honesty, the sort of shape you are looking for here (the pads and the shape of the upper part of hat) would be examples of perfect candidates for some sculpted prims.

You might want to use a cylinder for the shoulder emblems as they follow the shoulder just a little and you can add visual thickness that way so they dont look like pieces of paper. I have seen in world examples made of boxes that look like American Football pads, lol oops which is taking thickness a bit too much far though.

(i know i could make the box just smaller but some objects you cant make smaller or might delete important parts) how can i place that texture ONLY on the top because it shows on each site atm. ty

Look for the option marked Select Texture in the edit interface. You see it there along with Use Grid, Edit Linked Prims, etc. Mark that circle while you have your prim selected in edit mode. You will see a white circle and crosshair on all the faces of the prim. That shows you have that texture selected. Click on any surface to select/deselect the surfaces you want and edit the texture. In this mode you can edit individual textures on a side of a prim or change one or more sides to different textures altogether.

05-22-2007 08:18
hello Guys plz help me out. The shoulder bars are done worked really fine. and now i was working on the hat (it should look later like a cop hat) http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/7793/pichatop4.jpgon the picture as you can see the (white/black) hat i took as an example. The black underpart is allready done didnt have that many problems with it added a texture to one allready. But the white front upper part i really have no idea what shape to use for it. I tried this and that (ring, torus) and it is still looking not right. What should i res and what size to make it look like the example?

A theory of hatness

One thing about a real life hat is that it will press your hair down. Something to contend with in SL is that the hat will NOT press the hair down. Instead, the hair will stick out thru the hat.
