Greetings :)

I am new and I am tinkering making stuff.

is it possible to join to objects, like a sphere and a block, to form 1 new object?

and how do I "remove chunks" from an existing object?

(I hope that makes sense; not finding much on searches for that)

Objects in SL, referred to as 'prims' can not be joined. They can only be linked togerther, but remain as individual pieces. There is no boolean function to cut out chunks either. You can however modify the shape, size and proportions of each of these and combine them to form new shapes. Think of them as something not far from childrens wooden blocks.

Like Cottontiel said, prims can only be LINKED or UNLINKED from each other.
Linking them together means you can then perform actions on the "object" as a whole, such as scale, rotate and move.

To do this, select the prims you would like to link and press CTRL+L (I think, I always use the toolbar but I am not at my home computer to check the name. It may be Tools).

You should look up the Ivory Tower in the search function...they have an in game self tutorial that walks you through how to manipulate objects.
