Man was/is born free; and everywhere he is in chains. One thinks himself the master of others, and still remains a greater slave than they.
-- J. J. Rousseau, 1762
Let's discuss the implications of Rousseau's famous saying for our lives in second life and in real life. Is it really true that people are born free yet all of us are "in chains"? What are the limits on our freedom? Did we create these limits or are they imposed on us? When is this legitimate? Do we have a need to be chained to obligations? Are our supposed masters really our slaves? Rousseau thought he had the answers for his era. Let's see if we can find some for ours.
