With all the shopping in SL this script must be out there. I'd like a visiting avatar to be able to pick up an object I am offering, look at it (camera change) and put it back down in the same spot. I know that it will require the avatar's permission (at least the first time). Can anyone steer me to this, or something close that I can copy and modify? Thanks.

Well, first, avatars cannot "pick up" an object. Period.
To make them appear to do so, you would have to attach the object to their hand.
In order to do that, they need to own the object and they would need it to be either worn, or rezzed in world, so that it could attach itself (which would involve a permissions request dialog box)
Next step is to move the camera - the new cam controls are much better than the old ones, from what I hear, but you'll still have major difficulties with people who explore a store using Alt-click camera control.
Finally, you need to play an animation. That bit is the easy one - since you have an attachment, you won't need a second permissions pop-up, but you will have to hope that their AO doesn't override it.
So.... how big an issue is it that you have to give the customer the item?

Maybe best not to pick up

I guess it could just float in front of them, if I knew how tall they were, but then they would have to know how to put it back in place. Or their hands could come up and it could float above them, not attach. Thanks for the reminder about having to own it to attach it. Any other tips?

you could do this with a poseball and move the object to match the pose, using a followcam to change views. the hard part would be moving the object to match the hand with diffrent sized avatars. maybe GetAgentSize you can fake it some. -LW
