Moving hair ribbons or ornaments?

I have seen a few avatars that have hair ribbons or other decorations that move a bit on their own when they are standing still, like they are blowing around a little in a breeze. Can anyone point me to information on how this is accomplished? Is it an animated gif image on a fixed-position prim? Is it a static image on a prim that has some sort of scripted movement applied to the prim? Something else?

I want to make a prop for a friend that will allow her to wear several feathers in her hair (5 feathers, each on a single prim) and have it so they move a bit, as in a breeze.

In a similar vein, can a skirt or loincloth be made to appear to move like that? Would it have to be a prim skirt?

Any advice on where to start would be appreciated, even if it's just info on who has already produced something like this, so I can contact them for info. I have a script that I can examine that moves a prim tail to make it wag. Is it something like that?

Hehe. Body parts that jiggle would probably sell like hotcakes.

Your options are llSetScale, llSetRot, llSetPos, and llTargetOmega for actual prim movement, but a lot of what you see is probably faked with textures.

Maybe its done with the animate texture command. Something like a texture thats part solid (ribbons) and part transparent (air around the ribbons). I think the Cubey teleporter does its engergize beam effect that way.

I am not certain about the actual implementation (I havent tried to duplicate this myself yet) but I understand that you can duplicate this effect using the particle system. I susbect it involves using a single bitmap sprite to create the effect you want.

Thanks for the info so far.

I know my Companion has a set of hair ribbons that move. I'll have to see if it is possible for me to analyze them, or, failing that, to contact their maker.

Right now, I suspect it's an animated texture on a wider invisible prim. It doesn't seem to move the way that moving the prim would be likely to do. Though changing the prim's scale at the same time as changing other factors might do it...

This effect is usually a cone prim that has the llSetTextureAnim set for that side of the prim so it gives the illusion of it spinning or twirling in the wind.

So ka? Thank you, Riann! That makes sense! Much better than a flat prim would be, yes.

That was the first thing I made after 1.7 was released :o The end result looks too scary for me to try and market it though :)

Finally got a good look at Mariko's hair ribbons that move so prettily. They are a texture on a transparent rotating cone.
