Making a sound louder

Okay, does anyone know of a way I can make a sound louder? I have an explosion sound but no matter what I do to it before uploading, after it gets into SL it's pitifully quiet. I've boosted the volume by about 300% on the original file and re-saved (so as far as it's concerned it's at normal volume) so it's nice and loud compared to the other sounds I have in the sequence. But it sounds EXACTLY the same as the original I uploaded, which is about half the volume of what plays before, when it should be equal to or louder!

It's as if SL is trying to even out the volume, but getting it horribly wrong.

llPlaySound() of course goes no louder than volume 1.0, so I can't use that to adjust (except to make the previous sounds quieter but then you can't hear it).

It's really annoying :(

Is there a program out there that someone has used to do it? I'm using Quicktime Pro (Mac) atm which does it fine for my end, but once imported into SL it sounds dead quiet.

300% is not a lot, it's about 3dB. But this far from "exactly the same". Quicktime Pro may perform some level post-processing.

Normalize your sounds before uploading (use Audacity for example) then adjust 'volume' in llPlaySound for proper level.
