I believe I know the answer to this, but I'll ask anyways, sorry if the answer is obviously no.
I have a build which could be a vehicle, but it is a lot of prims, 175 in total, I can make it go up and down with an elevator script, which is nice, but is it possible at all, or can I add any kind of script that would make it move in other directions, either free standing or attached to the avatar, or is it just 143 prims too big to be useful for anything at all, other than just looking nice?

However, YES, you can put scripts in it that will enable it to be "driven" in ways similar to a vehicle.
In my opinion, the number and size of the scripts involved is prohibitive, and the quality of "vehicle" you end up with isn't really worth they effort. Sandboxes are full of people flying around bloated, overprimmed "starships" and whatnot.
I'll send you a copy of the "Anti-Griefing Vehicle" inworld, that'll allow you to move linksets as large as 255, and you can tweak the script from there.
But again, I personally prefer to see the skill and artistry that people can manage "on a budget"... the results of non-physical vehicles simply don't impress me.

thanks for your reply. It was a build exercise really, and I am aware it is over primmed, it was built as if it was constructed in RL, so many of the prims are for 'construction support' which obviously aren't needed in SL, partly influence by that Linden "how to make a tea pot tutorial". It was also an experiment using scripts & sound in a fully linked build, well basically a whole lot of little projects thrown into one, it was fun and I'll be able to use bits of the experience to build other less excessive builds in the future. It's my little monster of a build and I love my monster
