Hi, Does anyone know of a script that activates the snapshot feature. Example, if I want to build a primitive camera, point it at an area and have it take a picture of a defined shape/size, and call a "save to disk" command....
Any thoughts or ideas are much appreciated...

E.D. Not possible. I've seen discussions about scripted remote cameras as a future feature and I believe that it will come eventually. But there's nothing in LSL to do it today.

... though to be fair, it's possible if you rigged your client to a set of simple keyboard macros.
But where's the fun in that?

and depending on what you want, some fun things could be accomplished by moving the camera associated with a sit. The telescope in Numbakulla is a good example. This is probably an underutilized feature. I'd give a reference, but I can't get to the Wiki. might be because I'm coming through a hotel connection... Lots of fun with that feature. I got a really good laugh out of the "mirror" that someone created using it.

Now if we could maintain a changed camera position drucing mouselook, remotely controlled mouse-aimed gun turrets would be a possiblity. Alas.

It's a good idea, unfortunately there is considerable latency taking pictures from SL -- it has to do an additional pass to save it to disk, I think, as opposed to a straight "Print Screen" so it ain't as spontaneous as I'd like it to be... there's always that pause in between, which makes it tuff for action photography and even tuffer if you have antialiasing modes on. Still, we can hope!

Thanks for everyone's input on this thread... I will definitely keep an eye out for any unique and creative uses of SL photography..it's very exciting to think that an API may someday emerge for camera controls...keep me posted anytime -E.D.

While I can see the use of automatic/remote camera controls and mouselook detatched from the avater, I can also see why it's a bad idea. If you add a listen and an instantmessage to a bullet, increase it's life, remove it's impact noise, and make it transparent you make a spy gun that is against the terms of service. Remote camera function would make it that much easier to spy on someone. While I know SL never has been and likely never will be secure by any stretch of the imagination, I wouldn't want to see it get worse. I can see it now.. a prim designed to shoot into an area to grab a snapshot or allow the shooter to mouselook around.
Anyway, I think that would be an all around bad idea because of the potential it has for abuse.

I hear you, but LL is going to have to address these issues anyway. It makes no sense to me to preclude such a useful feature solely because of potential abuse. Instead, LL needs to deal with the abuse and give us tools to police it ourselves. Just as an example, there have already been calls for a finer granularity of script control on land such as being able to disable push scripts without having to turn off scripts entirely. It seems to me that this sort of capability would go a long way to mitigating any potential harm of remotely captured pictures.

Photojournalism and Camera Scripting
06-10-2005 13:41
As far as an emerging issue for scripting cameras, look at the history of photojournalism itself. Capturing and reporting on actual events can sometimes help influence a society. The more people theat know about what's going on in the world, the better... For the film-maker, multiple remote cameras would lead to an entire world of virtual film making and editing with multiple camera angles. Why not have the same features of a film camera complete with f-stop and shutter speed for timed exposures and lighting.. I've seen some nice sunrises after a long SL night.. Remote cameras with scripts, even on bullets, sounds cool to me! How about cameras that follow people? Of course, a script that detects following cameras and removes them, or allows them, would be a prerequisite. At least on land that permits scripted cameras... I thought it might be interesting to have a camera pointing on my first-land, and observe how visitors interact with the gallery space. Or do time-lapse imagery, including trigger-sensors. I think the Blog or photo-blog is an extension of this topic. Well, I have to leave this post and get back to more SL photo snapshots! Smile
