How did you get started into LSL (assuming you're not a script guru outside of SL)?
What types of codes would you recommend scripting newbies try out to jump into LSL, and learn?

Run through the tutorials at http://lslwiki.com, and then start working on a small project like a poseball. Once your small project is done, find ways to improve it.

If you can make simple scripts then you probably already have an understanding of the core structure of the language.
Now its a case of learning the API, how the different functions work, or dont .The Script Library, this forum and the wikki are probably the best resources around. Its really dependant upon your personality as to how best to proceed: Sign up for some of the LSL classes in world. Other than that try to find a mentor. Pick a project and see if you can do it. If you get stuck ask questions, there are always people here willing to help. |

Pick a project and see if youc an do it. If you get stuck ask questions, there are always peopel here willing to help. This would be my advice. What do you wish to do with scripts? Think of something. Try to do it. If you can't work it out, ask others, or post on this forum. There is little point trying to just "get better at scripting", one needs practical, specific goals, or else one will never be able to ask meaningful questions of anyone else or have an idea of what to research. _____________________

The first few things I built were:
- A Xytext sign - A proximity sensor that alerted me when someone approached my house, and greeted the visitor via the Xytext sign ![]() - Later changed that sensor to a collision detect at the entry to the house. - A multi-point transporter which also uses Xytext for display. - A personal "radio", or land parcel audio stream selector thing. - A BIG Xytext message board which I can update from the real world via email. (I like Xytext )All pretty simple, and most of the code was taken from these forums and lslwiki.com, but I learned a lot. |

That's what I do. I pick something I want to do.. make a lucky chair, or a message board, or something.. then I grab my wiki bookmark and jump in. Then, when I'm buried up to my eyes and can't see a way out, I start IMing everyone I know. Since I don't actually have many scripting people on my buddy list, I usually end up posting a thread in here.
I've taken on some really ambitious projects for someone with as little scripting ability as I actually have.. but I'm learning. So far I've managed to get about 1/3 of my lucky chair finished, without any outside assistance. I'm seriously thinking I might be able to pull the whole thing off this time. But we'll see. _____________________

I've been scripting for about two weeks now(Hey, it's my anniversary. Yay!) My first working scripts were ONE function, ONE event scripts in each of about fifteen individual keys that caused them to say something when each was pressed. This was less a first scripting exercise than a butchering of the default script, and that's okay. Start there.
Then I made an old-timer scripting friend who directed me to the Wiki, and made a few corrections to my first tries. My second baby was a "power station" that delivered a particle stream with random colors to a scripted object that got close enough. Then, I was hooked. This week, I made a little improvement on my house: a small mushroom behind the couch which, when clicked on, causes the walls to scroll a loud tie-dye pattern(you gotta find a floating piece of cheese in the fireplace and click it to "come down" .I've got some bigger projects lined up, including my first vehicle(pray for Mojo), and some nice theme vendors. |
