Ok really quick question here...
So I know that a script can work out if an avatar is wearing a certain group tag or not... Can it also tell if they're wearing the group tag but have it hidden?

Hidden? You mean wearing a tag that has a blank line for the title? I guess I never tried doing that, but I suspect that it wouldn't make any difference to llDetectedGroup or llSameGroup. They don't look for floating words. However, if you mean, "Can it detect group membership if the av doesn't have that group active?" the answer is No, you can't.
ETA: And if you mean, "Can it detect the group if you have your own preferences set to hide group tags?" the answer is Yes. That's a client side effect. You can hide the tags on your own screen, but that doesn't affect what anyone else or llDetectedGroup sees.
