Mono is just a difered VM for the LSL code on the servers. All you need to do is learn regular LSL. :)

Mono should be out sometime in August according to CG Linden, a few weeks back he mentioned the (likely) roll out off the client and server software as was planned. Unless there some major hangup, expect it out in 2 to 4 weeks.

Mono, btw, is the open source version of Microsoft's .NET framework. It's the 'virtual machine' that will execute LSL code that is compiled under mono. Once mono rolls out, new scripts written will have to be compiled under mono, and older scripts will have to be recompiled, to take advantage of mono's speed and memory enhancements. LSL VM will continue to run as well, as, many scripts in use out there exist where the bytecode only exists, and the source has been lost, so some scripts will not be able to be recompiled to mono.

Think of it as swapping out the 4 cylinder engine in your car for an 8 cylinder engine. More power, faster, but nothing to the user changes, you still drive it the same way as before. Well, maybe go easier on the gas pedal ;)
