Can anyone recommend a good and affordable hosting provider that offers php & mysql, and anything else that might be handy for LSL integration? Also, I'm assuming a terms of service which would allow multiple developers to access the domain.
Umm...don't know what else to put here, r/l I'm more of a backoffice Oracle guy and haven't done much with the web, but I need to/want to get more into .NET and web services, SOAP, python, etc.

For PHP/MySQL hosting, I recommend Bluehost.
Domain purchases, I recommend godaddy.com
At the end, however, you mention .NET...which is not PHP...

Will you end up needing FTP and how much traffic are you looking at. It all depends on what you need. You can register a domain and get some services from Google, Microsoft and others. But like for wqork we have a lot of data flow through the ftp and we have a Master account from AlterHosting. That is $30 a month but then again we get:
10 Domains1 5 000 MB of Disk Space2 5 000 MB of Disk Space for BackUp3 Unlimited Traffic Unlimited Mail Accounts FREE domain name registration FREE SSL Server Support FREE Anonymlous FTP PLESK control panel Unlimited FTP accounts 5 gig FTP capacity Site Building and Content Management Tool 100 Major Search Engines Submission Scripts Library Unlimited Customer Support
All on very fast servers. So you really need to do some figuring and some shopping.

Some clarifications - this will be a learning account, meaning no heavy bandwidth requirements. No streaming or anything like that, at least for now.
Primary focus will be on (1) LSL integration, and (2) figuring out web services (XML, SOAP, etc). Not sure how .NET would fit into this, but I'm sure it does...somehow. Just want that option in case I need to learn it for work (I have prior VB/C#/VC++/C experience but havn't gotten heavily into .NET or any of the other new MS stuff because of my current work direction with Oracle).

Just as an FYI, the use of the http request api in SL will probably lead you to not use SOAP and XML. I can't believe I am saying this (being the biggest advocate of typed data that XML and SOAP offers) but the bloat of XML almost immediately sends you over the limits of the http request.
A RESTful approach is more in order here because of the ability to send only the data you need and that is actually fine in this situation because SOAP is great when anyone might be calling your service but it is most likely that you and only you will be calling these services and you know whats coming over the wire.
Anyway, that has been my experience, results my differ...

I use discountasp.com for .NET - but it is a total MS/IIS/.NET/SQL Server environment. I'm not sure what mixing the platforms would be like in one environment. I also have a siteground.com account for hosting MediaWiki which, of course, is all based on MySQL/PHP.

GoDaddy.com for your domains
HostGator.com for your hosting. I get unlmited domains, unlimited subdomains, unlimited e-mail, 100 GB storage, 1 TB bandwidth/month, MySQL, PHP, etc, etc, etc, ... for $10/month
It's fast, reliable, and I have only filed one service ticket in the 3 years I've been with them. It was resolved within the hour.
I have hosted .mov files there and viewed them in SL with no problem.

I have been doing web development for many years and have gone through a ton of hosts. I have been with JodoHost.com for the last 2 years and they have been great! almost no downtime, very quick support response time and they have gone way above and beyond what most other companies will do in order to help me get some of my projects going.
I have a reseller account think it's called "Lite host plan" it's $17 a month. includes every feature you get anywhere else and with this reseller account I can create windows, Linux sub accounts, and they even have coldfusion mx. you will never need another hosting account. They have cheaper plans too but I like the freedome of the reseller plan.
