I'm offline for a few days, but in the meantime I'm drafting a spaceship I started friday.
I'm looking back on past designs I've built and trying to work out certain problems I'm having with seats. I saw the effect I wanted in the Dominus Shadow. I might buy one of it'll stop off-worlding in hovercraft mode.

I want to put the pilot's chair far enough foreward that he has a good view in mouselook, but I want to be able to move the seat back and turn 180 so when he stands up he's not stuck in the ceiling, ejected from the craft, or off-worlded. I want him deposited on the deck of the ship.

Is there a safe, clean way to do this?

Make the inside surface of the front prims transparent. Call it a "viewscreen".

I toyed with that aswell, the problem is that when someone clicks standup it happens instantly there is not enough time to respond.

Yes. I will have to train the pilot-monkies to use an unsit command instead.
Worse will be the Astrogator and Firing control positions, which may have their own little view domes.

This is an application where mirrors in SL would be a BIG win. You could just construct a two-mirror periscope and let them look out that way.

Hmmm...

If they did curved reflectors right, you could even build real tank optics.

Good idea, until people started using it in combo with bling and creating a spatial rift in the sim's processors, dooming us all.
