Scripting Resources?

Does anyone know about any educational scripting resources? Everything I'm finding is eather super basic, are for something totally useless, or set to no modify, and all the lsl wikis I've seen just cover the functions and not methods (it shows the function but not how to use it).

For example, even simple things like making one of those chairs that sits your AV on touch (you know the ones where a little folding chair pops up by your cursor when you look at it). I spent hours looking for anything to help me with scripting one of those.

Another thing is passenger seating for vehicles, I cant find any information (much less examples) anywhere. Not to mention what any of the vehicle parameters actully do in laymen terms

What gives?

as abouve, it`s the default behavior in the build menu, change from touch to sit
u can then add a basic seating script and animation wich are all over the place :)

No there is not a complete guide, but I have worked in many different languages and never found one there either that told me exactly what I wanted to know. Basically, I consider each function to be a different color or shape lego and I just piece them together to make things. But then I like to work from a blank sheet of paper or in this case a clean table.

My first script in here was a car script and I fussed with it for a month to get it right. And yes I did not understand exactly how the functions worked. So I read from a number of sources available on the internet about depicting and moving things within a 3d space, the difference between x,y and z and x,y, and z rotations and basic game physics. These concepts are explained very well in many sources. For example, the tutorial for Poser is excellent on x,y and z and rotations. I have not found many concepts in SL that are unique to SL. So in understanding many of the concepts that you need to write a script you really need to understand basic 3d game concepts.

Ok so let's not get silly about this. If you have seen a house you can build one in here. And if you have opened a door you know how it should work in here. But to script a door in here you need to know that it needs to rotate around the z axis and setrot or setprimativeparams will do that.

I have not seen a good 3d concepts writeup that covers all the concepts needed for sl and how the functions map to the concepts. Perhaps there is one and, if not someone should write it. That would be very helpful for new script makers.

There are boxes of scripts at freebie places. read them

There are tutorials and sample scripts at the Wikis. read them.

There are many, many discussion threads in these forums. Scripts too. Read them.

The Wikis are not complete nor thorough because people don't work on them to improve them.

The sooner you make your first 5,000 mistakes, the sooner you will improve.

All in all, excellent advice. One caveat, though:

Read them, but not necessarily as good examples. Some, I swear, are survivors in an abortive genetic programming experiment, dragging useless appendages in their clumsy path. That is, if you see something confusing in a freebie script, that might be because it's just confused. (Well, my scripts are that way, too... that's why I never post code, lest I befuddle the young'ns. ;) )

You mean like this?: :D

default
{
state_entry()
{
{
if (0 == 0)
{
llSetTimerEvent(1);
}
else
{
llSetTimerEvent(1);
}
}

timer()
{
if (0 == 0)
{
llSay(0,"Hello, Avatar!";);
llSetTimerEvent(0);
}
else
{
llSay(0,"Hello, Avatar!";);
llSetTimerEvent(0);
}
}

Too bad the Wikis are comatose...

The wiki.secondlife.com almost never gets improved, and some of the other wikis, wich still contain better info, get griefed.
