Is it possible from script to detect the For Sale status of an object and/or prevent it from being marked for sale?

Not by script. There's no function to detect or modify the 'for sale' option on items.

You could write software to operate an avatar which could do this (commonly called a bot). But I'm pretty sure that's not what you're after. :)

Addendum, there is no way to detect it, but if it's already set you can halfway disable it via llSetClickAction (it'll still be available via the pie menu, but for pay, you can additionally move to a state without a money event to completely disable it.)
