remote agent sensor reporting?

Just a conceptual question (though practical answers appreciated)

Is it possible to have a remote sensor that detect agents and based on the results, affect the status of another object?

For example, a little sensor that detects someone enter its range of effect that causes another object to start a particle script, etc?

If this is possible, great, I'll delve into the specifics. Any help is appreciated in advance.

Or if there is a device that does this already for sale, that's fine too :)

Yes it's possible.

Basically when the sensor fires you can make it do whatever you want (well there are some limits) but firing a particle system, including one that targets the person, no problem at all.

Get your particles sorted out. In the sensor event write the llParticleSystem code you write, after any suitable if statements to filter it.

Well, that encouraging, but let me clarify one point.

Object A (the sensor) is located 300m above the ground in a box.

Object B (the indicator) is located on the ground, 300m away from the sensor.

So when Object A detects the presence of an agent near it, it can cause Object B to react. Object A does not react, it's just a sensor. Only Object B changes state depending on the result of Object A's sensor detection.

That's the behaviour I hope is possible :)

You could have A email B.

There's a couple of recent threads about communicating in such a fashion. llEmail, intermediate relay stations, a courier prim etc. will all let you do that.

And yes, remember 96m range on your sensors.
