There's no one "safe zone" combat system - there are lots of different methods that one can use. (Actually, it would be a good idea to have one common standard, that's on my long-term projects list.) Generally they work along the following lines:

1. each person has an attachment that picks up "damage" signals, or there is a script in a vehicle which does the same - this can be the weapon used for the game
2. projectiles or guns then tell the damage attachment when they have scored a hit
3. the damage attachment causes various effects based on damage signals that it has received - say, decrementing a hit point counter, or forcing you to stay still for X seconds once you are "dead"

Some safe zone combat systems like Frag-Foo (or for that matter the Steel Pigeons at my Lighthouse in Caledon) can work by detecting collisions from anything, allowing you to use all sorts of weapons, but those don't allow for differing damage settings.

I have written scripts for duelling weapons, including swords, and I've used my own system, but you could look up the creators of existing systems and ask them if there are publicly available scripts that you could add to your weapons to get them to be compatible.

Really, the easiest thing I find is to set a parcel to damage for the duration of the fight, but sometimes that's not practical I realise.

I think he may be referring to all the weapons that call themselves "safe zone combat compatible", the two most popular I have seen are "Warriors Combat" and ACME.

You can buy full perm versions of the ACME script at her stores.

I have them made a couple simple swords, they work fine ...

hope it helps

Go to the sim called "City of Lydius", and look on the boat for the Javelin box - it contains a free, full perms safezone combat script and explanation about how to make your own.

Or contact the guy who made that box, James Argonaut (search for "James A";).

If someone does find these boxes please toss a copy or two to me. I'm collect some of these things for a little repository project.

Interesting enough (at least form me) I finished to dress up my Gor Builder AV yesterday and was looking for the same information.

It seems incredible to me that one could go into a Gor area being engaged (and possibly killed) without any clear written rule of how the combat is supposed to happen.

What if shouting "you're DEAD" would kill me immediately? How could I know it is allowed? There must be an agreed protocol written somewhere!

I tried different meters collected in different ports but all have no-mod scripts so I could not infer from that how damage is taken!

I went around asking but nobody seems to know (or willing to help).

Anyone able to shed a light?

I've heard of something called the Laura safe combat system, but I don't know a lot about it (except that it's free).

Thanks I will look for it when I'll relog later today.

I fully agree with good Role Playing during combat but for those who threw innumerable d20s in their life this uncertainty is frustrating :)

I think it would be great to create an RPG system based on already established rules/tables. It would guarantee a fair game and, once agreed on the protocol, could furhter open the market for interoperable weapon/armours!

I won't say to adopt AD&D d20 system (far too complex) but something lighter like the system at http://www.geocities.com/mithrapolis/ladder.pdf could be interesting (with the scripted objects that do all the mechanical work!) :

But maybe the Games forum would be more appropriate for the discussion :)

Well it is a scripting question too :)
I can already see the scene, you draw your sword and 3 giant dice fall out of the sky ....

Laura also uses RP dice. Basicly a 2d10 system. (I was/am the Administrator of Laura. I'm on sabbatical at the moment.) The badges for most of the places were based on two or three authors' systems. I'll look it up and see if I can find the information, contact me inworld and I can give you copies of the badge and the RP dice. I may have a copy of the javelin too, I'll have to search.

Treat.
