shouldn't first line be something like

message= llListen(integer sender_num, integer number, string message, key some_key)

I'm with Stephen, I'd go for:

CODE
link_message(integer sender_num, integer number, string message, key some_key)
{
if(llList2String(llParseString2List(message,[" "],[]),0) == "deployAltitude")
{
//llOwnerSay("Trigger set");
chuteHeight = llList2Integer(llParseString2List(message,[" "],[]),1);
llMessageLinked(LINK_ALL_OTHERS,chuteHeight, "", "");
}
}
...and I'd expect 'message' to have a value like: deployAltitude 100
