If you use floating text on a prim near the border of your land, the chances vare excellent that the floating text will intrude into your neighbor's property ... not a good thing.
Is there a way to set parameters with llsettext or some other function in order to limit the visible distance of the floating text?

No, I don't think so... You could put a solid object behind it - it's supposed to occlude the text but doesn't always.

Paint the name of your product on the vendor image, then use xyztext.. to set your dynamic prices from your vendor.. but do it graphically.
you can get 5 characters on 1 prim.. that's enough for "99999" if you paint the L$ on to the background. If all your vendor graphics have a space for the XYZ text numbers to show.. you could solve this by adding ONE prim to each vendor.
Of course.. integrating the concept into a commercially purchased vendor system (like JEVN for example) might be an uphill battle.
or.. you could just paint the price onto the image.. that adds no prims, but costs you a bit to change prices.
Personally, I hate floating text.

I'm not a huge fan of hovertext either, but I use JEVN, so I prefer to just leave it on. I normally only put a very short description on there that wouldn't be feasible to paint on the texture.
I paint the prices on my display images mostly because it draws more attention if they can see right up front some of the features and information regarding an item before buying, but I also make sure to keep a detailed notecard for each one as well so they can get some small info up front and if they're interested get the notecard.

Thanks all for the quick response ... yes, they do go through solid objects *dang*!
Maybe some Linden might consider improving llsettext so that in addition to the color, you could control coordinates and visible distance ... sigh!

in my opinion.. if you can't see the prim generating the hovertext, you shouldn't be able to see the hovertext.
But if wishes were horses...
