Ive seen them everywhere, most people grief with them. But I ask them to teach me but they all say no (but much harsher). Anyway, ive looked around alot, trying to find something that will let me make my own magic spells yet I cant seem to find the scripts I need to lets say, rez an ivy trap around an avatar, or create a breath of flames (im sure a custom animation is used in here somewhere too). I know that most of these spells require me to build things, thats no problem, but things like particles for lets say, wind spells or fire/ice spells, I cant quite do. Could somebody please help me out, anyhelp at all will do, I'de be forever greatfull.

I've been trying to put together a tutorial for particles for the confused. It's still in alpha, but you're welcome to look at it, it's here: http://eloisepasteur.wordpress.com/learning-about-particles/ it will eventually migrate to the wiki once it's a bit more settled. (Anyone else with any comments also gratefully received!)
That might help with that part of your query, although it won't directly address making the specific effect you want, it will take you through making particles do more and more what you want. Ivy "trap prims" etc. are harder, and not particles. They're also such a potential griefing tool that you probably won't find anyone that will tell you how here. _____________________

I won't give you the full story, but here's a clue. For things to act on something you say, you need a listener. That listener has to be nearby and rez'd, so it's most helpful if it's an attachment like a ring or a staff. The object can then run scripts to do what you want to do. You're on your own for targeting, though.

Hi Jet,
As you might be able to guess by my name I like writing spells myself. If there's anything you can't figure out, IM me in game and I'll see if I can't offer some assistance. As far as particle effects and whatnot the best tutorial anywhere in world is at Jopsy Pendragon's Particle Labs... its where I learned particles... |

You could do what I've been experimenting with. Just have whatever the magical object is rez an invisible prim (that's set to phantom and will eventually delete itself) by command. What I do, is have it set to listen for specific commands on a certain channel (though I'm lazy and want to make sure it acknowledges what I ask, so I set it to zero. That way, when I say "spawn123" I'll be sure it's accepting the command. Once that's done, it spawns an invisible prim set to phantom (so that it doesn't bump me away) and it plays an animation...sort of. (That's still a work in progress for me.) Anyway, once it does that, the invisible prim gives off the spell effects for so much amount of time before deleting itself. An important thing to note is that the object that is rezzed is within the magical item as well. So if the magical item is called to rez an object named "fire", it will find that object inside it and rez it. If it's not there...then..er..."error".
![]() Now, for other spells it's different, depending upon the spell. My scripts are really Frankensteined from various scripts so I know they're more likely to work. This is why, if you want to fire a projectile, it wouldn’t' be a bad idea to look at some gun scripts. All you really need to do is have the object that's rezzed be physical, and just insert the script for a bullet inside it. Then insert the "bullet" into the magical item and tell it to rez that on command according to the gun script. (With edits so you don't act like you're holding a rifle or make a gun fire sound while firing the spell.) As for other spell effects...it varies... Just recently I made a spell that rezzes a magical effect that follows me along the ground as if it were an "aura" spell. This just involved editing a "pet script" that's been floating around here in the forums. (It was a pain though, as it wouldn't stop spinning faster and faster until I figured out how to get it to stop.) I hope that explains it in detail without boring you. ^^; |
