I've created an in-world/outworld communicator (sort of a makeshift instant messenger) that has been working very well for like 2 months... today: any emails coming from RL (I've tried 3 different addresses to make sure) are taking about 5 minutes to reach the in-world mail queue. Object-to-Object and Object-Outworld emails are working fine. Outworld-Object is what is taking a long time. Anyone have any ideas as to what is going on? I've talked with some other scripters and they are experiencing the same behavior.

Yep, this happens periodically and no one has pinpointed the cause in all instances.
In past times, it has been someone running 20 concurrent scripts per each of 100 objects to inform them of something of dire importance. But it could be just about anything.
Unfortunately, there are no guarantees of timely delivery in SL; consider yourself fortunate that they aren't simply being lost altogether.

SMTP (one of the email protocols) between mail servers is often considered a low priority protocol by internet systems. Also, depending on your mail client configuration and your ISP and LL's ISP and LL's configuration (*takes deep breath*), there may be a few store-and-forward boxes along the way that delay your email. Sometimes LL's email does hit a snag unrelated to any of these concerns, but what I'm basically saying is whether you're mailing to them or anyone else, never rely on email being anything more than a "sometime today" type of service. |
