Can't watch TV.. not parcel owner

Not sure if this is a scripting question or not... but the "REAL VETERANS" of SL glitches and glorps are here in Scripting.

Okay, I've got this ship.. right.. and it's a basic 30 prim, physical ship.. but it's like a flying skybox inside. I'm slapping a rezzer into the ship, and what I want to do is fly around, park on friendly land, and rez up my furnishings. Then when I'm ready to make way, derez the contents, and hit the skyway. A virtual "winnebego".

Anyways.. I'm slowly but surely working on the various furnishings.. and I got to the TV. There's a LOT of land that has a video stream associated with it. And frankly, this seems like something that would be really cool. Fly around looking for interesting things to watch. But every one of the freebie TV's I can locate for a basis from which to mod my TV.. freaks out.. because I don't own the land, so I can't set the parcel's feed setting. Thing is, I don't WANT to do that, I just wanna piggyback on the feed, and get some video to go with the sound generated by my hud play button.

Can anyone point me in the right direction here? is there a "chroma key" texture I need to apply to a prim? or is there a complex script needed? is this even POSSIBLE? I know that at least at one casino I've been to, they have 2 screens for thier video feed.

How the video streams work, is that a specific texture on the face of a prim is replaced with the media stream. So you would have to have access to this texture from the land owner, and place it on your TV.

Scripts that control the media stream using llParcelMediaCommandList can only be run by the land owner.

Is there a universal "Video stream" texture? or is it parcel/landowner specific?

Its specific to the parcel, set by the owner. There is no universal texture. Sorry.

Bugger.

Any chance that a script might be able to query the parcel for the ID of that texture.. like may "on rez", and then apply it to a prim?

there is llParcelMediaQuery, but again it only works for the landowner.

Winter... that is a nice idea - carry around your own TV set. Unfortunately, as has been pointed out, your "screen" has to be using the particular texture that the parcel owner has set.

But to answer you question about "one casino I've been to, they have 2 screens for thier video feed..." When a parcel has a valid Media URL, the QuickTime player simply replaces any surface using the specified texture with the video output. One could create 100 prims, of all shapes and sizes, all using the same texture... the video would then play on all of the different surfaces (that can create some nice effects, but can also be ugly as all get-out:)

Oh well, guess I'll have to live with my radio and a slideshow screen.. Less fun, but oh well.

I think you'd find that 80% of TV products use a standard set of parcel media textures. So, you could go out and buy or acquire one of each TV brand to get ahold of their media textures. Then, simply build a TV set with a texture changer. When you get to land with a stream... start the stream and switch between the textures until you see a picture.

As no kind of SL expert (yet), I hope DD Edison's eminently practical solution worked for you.

Parcel owners should set their TV to a group with free membership, as suggested at: http://www.slguide.com/index.php?o=&channel=&help=1#access.

Being a good hostess to the homeless, I do that with my TV - but I can't view it! One thing that nobody ever mentions, even on slguide.com, is that the US freeview services only stream to America. My caff gets full of people enjoying films I can neither see nor hear, while I'm limited to a few crappy ads & trailers :(

So .... Ask your "landlords" to create a TV group but, if you're in Europe - don't bother!

Cheers
(ps, you can camp at my place but I've recently downsized, so it may be tricky. I'll rezz the TV for you though ;) )

Thanks.. the project is still a long way from being completed. Got involved in more lucrative projects, and made some friends with good connections as to land. IN reality, my poor pc can't really handle streaming content and SL at the same time.. Most often I just use a small skybox in snadboxes.. that seems to solve most of my "home" needs.. at least for now.

It would be cool if there were a way to do the "portable tv": thing.. but it seems LSL needs a few new toys before it can support making my dream come true.

With as many new "landless noobs" as SL has seen of late.. perhaps it's a function that one day will be implemented.
