Ouch. That sounds like a task for an outside server.
Probably something in Perl with the XML-RPC module, set it up to use Google language tools. The main thing in this project would be to have an external server. I'm sure none of us want to actually write a translator in LSL. _____________________

hi.
I have something like that. I just got caught up on non western langs, and shelved the project for a bit But it does italian ok. It's definately doable. Mines just not ready for release. And it would be free. Charging for language just seems wrong. _____________________

Does Google provide an API into their language tools? Or would the server-side script have to pretend it's a web browser and handle the HTTP communications with the Google page and then extract the results from the response?

no api. the script pretends it's web browser (CURL) and scrapes the relevant bits out.

I do have a working prototype that I made eons ago. It does English, Dutch, German, French, Portuguese, and Spanish. I was mucking around with romanized Russian and Japanese also. As far as the eastern languages, unicode is a bit, well, not working as expected in SL. The main reason I never advanced the project is the load it would put on my server vs. profitability. If you have server space to run the backend (it utilizes Perl) I am sure we could work something out....
I was also working on having it recognize the language spoken, however that is a bit haphazzard (since the similarities between different languages, it really is not possible to 100% guess the language from a short message). |

Could I add my voice to this project? It would be a great way to push SL out to the rest of the world. The user would have to set the translation from language and to language. You would also need some shortcuts (like gestures) so that certain idioms could be added to the translation.
