First off, I'd like to state that I've never scripted anything, unless you count QBASIC and Litestep. lol I've easily grasped the basics, and I can manipulate prims pretty well now (I read every single function); however, I don't know how to manipulate my avatar. One thing I'm trying to do is make it so that when I attach something to my avatar, it raises him on the z axis. I was able to successfully do this with hover, but the end result looked quite silly. So what I'm wondering is if there's something that makes me "trick" my avatar into thinking the ground is a couple of meters higher than it truly is while something is attached.

This would be done with an animation, you would start and stop the animation in your script.

If you just want to BE up there, you can attach an invisible buoyant physical object and use commands (llMoveToTarget, etc..) to move it. Within the limits of physics, your avatar will follow. Play a dance anim at the same time and your avatar will dance in the air.
However, if what you really want to do is basically move the surface on which you walk into the air, why not rez something invisible at the right position and move up to it (maybe with a very local TP, sit on something that moves you up there and unsits you. Use a sit anim that looks like a stand and it wouldn't be TOO weird looking.). Then you can walk around there very naturally. . |

Okay. I just read over animations and how they work, and I'm quite surprised to find out I actually already know how to do that (I've been using Poser for about 12 years now); however, I'm not quite sure I follow how it would apply here. I just make a .bvh file that lifts me a couple of meters, but will it continue to hold me at that height until I detach prim? For instance, will walking and every other interaction be the same... only with me a little higher?

I was trying not to give out my idea, but I guess it's the only way to figure this out. I wanna make some platform shoes with giant platforms (1.5-2 meters high), but I don't know how to make my avatar walk on them. When I try llMoveToTarget, he goes back into hovering, which looks ridiculous. Maybe I'm just not smart enough to figure it out even with help. *sigh*

many shoes already come with animations. What you'll have to do with your shoes is create custom animations for quite a few of the SL animations, including things like sitting (you'll want to have the legs stretched out or curled up against the avatar), and include them with an animation overrider (like Franimation overrider) in one of the shoes.

Wow. I didn't think it was going to take all that just to wear a pair of sweet boots. Oh well. Back to the grind I go. *gets to animating and checking out this Franimation thingie*

You might want to get a pair of Curio Obscura's leg extension stilts and see what you think of how she solved some of the problems.
