Is there anyway I can run and test my scripts without having to log in to SL via the client? Is there some external way to access the virtual machine, or preferably, is there some free-standing LSL intrepreter I can download to develop my scripts?? Basically, I want to be able to work in peace without having to log in and deal with all the drama of being logged in as an Avatar.

Thanks...

Check out lslint at http://www.w-hat.com

It's a command-line compiler.

For some types of testing, also take a look at Alphons Jano's LSL Editor (and compiler) described here and here.

I've used TextPad with the LSL syntax file which allows psuedo-compilation with more meaningful error messages.
