Hi there - could you please let me know if I need to be insdie of Second Life when emailing an Avatar ( for example - @lsl.secondlife.com ) or if there's just a delay in the email coming through.

You cannot email avatars. What you can do is send them instant message. Either directy or by an object. If the person have the option set to send IM to email if offline they will get an email. They can also reply via email back to SL and it will be treated as an IM.

I believe when an avatar IM's you and you have IM ot email configured a session ID and a unique email address is created on a temporary basis (3 days?) so that you can email them back and it will show as an IM. The session-email address might be in the email you recieve from the avatar.
