I heard rumor that there is a way to play audio files residing on an outside server through the QuickTime streaming video (without visuals of course)
In other words, say I have a file residing at "http://www.secondlife.com/mysoundfile.mp3" Is there any way other than through streaming that an avatar can hear this file in-world? I was under the impression that this is how move "rentals" and "cd's" in SL worked, by simply allowing you to access the url of the movie or song.
Any advice on the topic would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

If set your parcel's video URL to an MP3 file hosted on a website, then yes, you will hear your MP3 file play back when you or anyone else on your parcel clicks play in their viewer.
An interesting side effect of this is that any prims that have your media texture applied to it (like a TV hanging on your wall) will light up a random solid color when Quicktime plays back an audio only file.
