I can't get inworld for a bit to test it myself, but am wondering something. When playing a sound. Does it just come from the absolute center of the object? Or does size of the object affect it at all? ie. I have a Victrola that plays a song, but for some reason, its too quiet, unless standing right next to it, in mouselook. If the sound originates from any point on an object, I could make the victrola rez a wide phantom disc above it (from where the sound would come from) to spread the sound farther.

I believe that llPlaySound() emits the sound from the prim's center. llTriggerSound() emits the sound from the x/y/z position of the object when the function is called.
However, your situation may be due to a preferences setting. Try adjusting your sound rolloff sliders, or something like that, in prefs. Adjust the slider full left, test, then full right and test to see which way works best for you.
