hi there, I think someone should come up with a script for security cameras that will actually take pics and the person will be able to monitor as long as they are somewhere on sl

Only avatars can take pictures, and it takes L$10 a go..
Objects and Scripts are still unable to.. _____________________

But it would still cost L$10 a time.. So a security camera taking them every so often would still be pretty unfeasible.. _____________________

If some script could allow you to take a snapshot every minute and send them to Snapzilla, it wouldn't be a dream for you to overtake Torley!

Hmmm....and the need for security cameras would be? I am fairly new here on SL so I may not get the point of this. Can people steal your stuff here?

What could be happening in a virtual world where theft is fundamentally impossible, harm to avatars is nonsensical and tresspass doesn't even harm the grass that would prompt you to want such a device?
I'm sure there are scads of players who would be happy to take your L$ to sit and watch nothing happen for you and even take screenshots of it. ![]() |

The first thing that springs to mind is spying on people, probably people engaged in sexual activity of some kind. Nothing to do with security there, just voyeurism. If I wanted to put up a "security" system I'd just use sensors and track movement, name, keys and conversation... why use pictures for security when you can just grab the unique key of everyone who visits your house when you are not there, as well a full list of everything they touch? I can't thin of a good reason to do this though, so instead I leave my workshop open; if I don't want it moved it has physics disabled, if I don't want it seen it has a box labeled SECRET rezzed over it. I'm sure there are scads of players who would be happy to take your L$ to sit and watch nothing happen for you and even take screenshots of it. ![]() Could this be the new camping chair? ![]() |

Wait, did that sound too serious? I've actually been thinking about inworld webcams for some time now. Remember when we had a Video Linden? _____________________

I would like it, but then I'm an obsessive snoop about my own land. I have all sorts of scripts set up to tell me when people do anything on it.
I'd also love to have a drone vehicle set up, moving around between positions, controlled via email and which I could tell to take a picture and email it to me whenever I liked. That would be *fantastic*. Certainly make my work day a lot more interesting. Actually, now I come to think of it, I could do *something* like that, but without the pictures... hmm... new project... |

I think Introvert is right.
Just hire a chair-camper type disposition person. Give them a camping chair that prods them to drop a snapshot into its inventory every few minutes before it pays them. It could upload it to Snapzilla or whatever for you too. Script that up and post to the employment forum and you could have your own personal security guard. ![]() Oh, and have the chair relay email > IM's so you can bark instructions at them through the chair ![]() |

i think the reason that objects cant take pictures (snapshots) is that the world is rendered locally on the the client computer.
so as far as objects are concerned there is no scene to take a snapshot of, in other words for the object to take the snapshot that object would need the processing power of the client computer to render the world. |

Then using my cameradetector wristwatch to know when the camera isn't watching I'll build a big wall prim and put the picture on it, facing the camera. Then I will walk behind it at will, leaving soft pretzel salt and crumbs ALL OVER YOUR CARPET while your camera takes pictures of an "empty" room. HA HA HA!!! Nothing indeed. |

There are some video games where you can control robot drones, and use them to peep around corners and things like that.
I think now that we have HUDs, that's one step. Next will be more pixelshader goodness, so we can simulate static displays. I guess we'll need more advanced sound filters to go with that too, so the sound can get all crackled up. Add some jitter and shaking, and some way of having one avatar control another, if not an outright NPC. _____________________

What about holding Video Linden captive?
