I've seen people using poof effect prims. Takes an image and rezzes lots of them, spreading them out. I was wondering how you'd go about scripting an object like this

It is particles.

Look up particles in the wiki. Or you could go to the Particle Laboratory (Find Places) within SL to see the parameters visually explained.

University of Second Life, MegaTower, also has some free, easy to use particle scripts.

The one I use is a modded version of Water Rogers's portaPFFT, which is 75L$ at Reverie, and you can tweak the script to your needs, and change the particle to whatever you want by getting the proper object UUID. You can also change the keyword used to trigger the "poof". Tres cool.

Hope this helps. :)

Just make sure you dont script it to use as many particles as possible, I find it *highly* irritating when people use it to emit the full particle limit possible. It just makes you look like a newbie who was dropped on the head :)
