Hi guys,

in earlier threads concerning large permanent storage I mentioned the technique that I use to store large amounts of data by using llSay and llOwnerSay to store the data in my SL chat log (chat.txt), then extract the data I want by using a little windows app I developed using Visual Basic Express 2005.

Several asked for a copy of the app, so I have tidied it up, added a small help file, and it is ready for testing.

It works fine on my XP machine, and it requires Framework (but not sure which version, so feedback on what you have and whether it installs successfully or not, and works or not, would be most welcome.

The file (400K) can be downloaded from this link:

http://www.woldspublications.com/temp/setup.exe

What happens when you try to install Beverly? Could you also let me know which flavour of Windows you are using, and which version of Framework is installed.

Thanks

Many thanks for that Beverly. I suspect it is the help file I attached. Will work on it.

Yeah, I have to work tonight, but I'll be testing this tomorrow. Nice idea. I tried to do some xml retention/extraction from chat a while back, but hell I'm an old-style db programmer lol. I couldn't get it to work. Always thought it was a decent idea though.

OK guys,

Everything *should* be fine now. It was the referencing for the help file that was causing it not to deploy correctly.

I have now included all the references via manifest files.

You can download the zipped folder from this link:

www.woldspublications.com/temp/publish.zip

Inside the zip file is the publish folder, save this anywhere convenient on your hard disk, then go into this folder and run the setup.exe file.

This does not place a shortcut on your desktop, but you will find the utility in your Start menu Programs, SLeuth, Sleuth

Please let me know if you install ok, or if you have any problems, and what you think of the utility.

Well I got it to work, or atleast you did :). In so far as it downloaded and installed just fine, but it dosn't apper to do anything.

I set a Parse value as per the help text and hit the parse button, but my entiere chat log sits there as if I had it open in notepad, but without the find capability. I am not trying to be negative here, I love what you are trying to achive and would like to use it as part of my systems. Let me know if there is any help I can give, I am keen to see this work.

Hi Very,

you are not alone. I was so cock-a-hoop over finally getting it to deploy with the help file, I din't recheck the functionality. My copy on my work PC also behaves the same way. I shall check it all this evening when I get in from work, and hopefully get a fully functioning version up this evening. I shall post when I have got it working on my other PCs OK.

Thanks Rock,

My intrest stems from the fact that I am dumping Data into the chat log, in a format that can be cut and pasted into a notecard, as a form of backup. This could save a lot of time finding the data.
