Physics Question

Hey everyone, it's been a while since I needed to know this stuff, and i can't quite find it on google :eek: . So i was wondering if anyone would mind correcting me on this if I'm wrong.

thrust = mass * ((final velocity - original velocity)/time)

Thats the formula I *think* I remember from my school days. The reason I ask is because I just thought to test the thrust produced by some vehicles in world, and I'm getting some crazy numbers according to this! Let's just say most of them are enough to turn a person into salsa dip in 0.2 seconds flat (that is if that formula is correct).

Anywho, any help is much appreciated. Thanx!

thrust = mass * acceleration

So yes, it can be approximated by your formula, but you may get strange artifacts when time is very short. But I think, from your salsa dip comment, what you're really trying to measure is the acceleration, not the thrust.

Or you could measure the power of vehicles' engines :)

thrust = mass * acceleration

Yea I guess that's correct, i just somehow remembered the longer version of it :)

That's exactly what im trying to do. It seems that the acceleration on most vehicles is *so* great that you would prbly be pushed *through* the vehicle before you topped out the max speed :eek: . Thanx tons for your help! Now I know I'm not crazy getting a reading of 110000 pounds of thrust! :eek:

Ah, well, 53 tons of thrust can come in handy at times :D But if your vehicle is very heavy that's OK, for example 100 tons of thrust applied to a 10000 tons boat / space cruiser will only result in a 0.01 g acceleration, hardly perceptible for the passengers ;)

lol very true :D . Just in case you were curious the vehicle returning 53 tons of thrust, was about 365 pounds including my avatar ;) . It took off extremly fast, topping out at near 300 mph in less than 1 second, before it promptly turned me into salsa! :D

Luckily Linden Lab invested in unobtanium bone structures for all of us when they upgraded from the Primitar to Avatar models.
Plus infinite-friction skin so when we sit on something we *really* sit on it :D

Ooops, that was acceleration in m/s^2, not g (factor 9.81)
