just a note.. if you quote someone who names a name, that quote will name them, even after the original is changed.. for the safety of all involved (or w/e) please don't quote it....

This guy has a horrible reputation. Check out the SLExchange forums, it's full of complaints against him.

So how do we tell the world to avoid doing business with a crook if we can't tell anyone who it is?

This reason for this rule is pretty obvious. I don't doubt the sincerity of the OP. (edit: worded wrong)

But what would happen if this was allowed in the forums? 90% of the posts would be never ending flame wars, back and forth with "He said, she said". People would be having fights with thier partners or a dispute with their neighor and coming here stating that So & So's store is horrible, the items don't work and thier vendors robbed me, etc.

It has been clearly stated here many times that you can name names all you want, just not here. Word does spread and there are other forums where it is allowed.

Either Strife or one of the new moderators will lock this thread. It would have already happened but this is a rare occurence in the scripting forum and it is not policed as frequently.

Is selling freebies against the ToS??

Is he selling it AS a direct copy of the freebie? I can imagine if you put work into building something to USE the freebie script, then that should be acceptable to sell. Ie. You built a plane to use the freebie plane script...

Selling freebies is often directly against the terms of release stated by the original creator. Am guessing the only way to get LL to sit up and pay attention would be for the original creator to lodge a ticket. Though what the heck. Raising your own support ticket on the issue couldn't hurt.
Actually I'm getting more grumpy in my old age, so I might even be tempted to raise an AR and see how the Linden's deal with it (Note: I wouldn't raise more than about one AR a month if you can avoid it, I hear they ignore constant AR reporters).

interesting question.... would the following example fall under the same rules?

"be aware, ABC store is selling DEF product, which you can get free at GHI location"

it's not an accusation, but seems like it might be restricted to products forum

I'd leave ABC out of that and just state that you can get DEF for free at GHI's :)

sure makes it easy for for people to rip others off though, don't it?

just seems odd that I can post UVW store sells ABC item... but not that it sells it for less than XYZ

Nods
Yeah it is a problem worth solving. Just about anyone who's been in SL for a while has lets say "a strong distaste" for people re-selling free items for a huge markup. I've been to a few places and hoped no-one would be suckered into buying the stuff, but there's actually not much I can do about it other than stand there in world and warn anyone who TP's in. Heh. No I'm not that sad.

But basically there is no mechanism for warning people that they are about to shell out for a free item in SL or on SLexchange.

What WOULD be handy (and a possible way round it) would be a searchable database somewhere of free items. Noobs could go look there for free items, hopefully along with SLURLS so they can get the free stuff. Not a total solution, but by the time they've filled up with a load of free goodies they should have a pretty good idea of what to avoid. I guess a wiki might do it so anyone can contribute, indexed by google so you can search the descriptions.

What's really needed though is some way of making it a proper Abuse Report worthy item.

necropost

In the context of the forums, the rootword of "necropost," which is "post," is most accurately defined as "a message published on a website." The prefix of the word, "necro-" most nearly means "dead." As such, the appropriate definition for a "necropost" (which can function as both a noun and a verb) would be ";(v) the act of publishing a message on a website in a dead topic" or ";(n) a message published on a website in a dead topic."

"dude... you just totally necroposted"
"lol what?"
"YOU POSTED IN A TOPIC FROM LIKE, 4 MONTHS AGO, LOLOLOLOL!"
