Just curious. As you start building more things that go beyond the base allocation (128 prims I think it is - i.e. I have the basic land plot) what do most of you scripters do:

(a) pay more to LindenLabs for more prim allocation? - this could start to cost a bit of real money :( Guess we've got to keep the system running.
(b) work in sandbox areas but have to TAKE often to avoid nightly cleanup
(c) rent a place (not sure what the normal prim allocation would be when renting)
(d) other ideas???? :)

I'm not really sure yet what I'll do with my end products, in terms of hosting on my own site, or offering to others to host, or try to sell. Do most product developers typically host their service/game/product themselves on their own land?

Cheers

Well, I don't own any land so I do all my work in sandboxes, but here's a couple of suggestions I can think of:

Ask a neighbour if you can borrow some of thier prim allocation for a bit.
Depending on the project you could move some of it into your HUD or wear it as attachments.
Ask a friend with a sim/ large plot if you could work there (or even just post in the forum for someone with some who has who'd be interested).

1. It's actually 117 prims for a base land. It means we must work on a very simple level or else...

A) Yes, I have had to go up a few tiers since I started. Originally it was because my builds were getting more complex, but my shop and laboratory needed more space as well. Yes, more money is a pain to pay, but it's within my purse's tolerances.
B) I tried to work on something in a sandbox last night-- it was like an hour before everything was reset and the sim was almost completely full of avatars and prims. I wonder if Fred Sanford was there...? Anyway, my skybox lab (Skylab?) is fine for now since I have another 480 prims to go.
C) I don't know if renting a space for development and not vending or living has been done a lot, but I can't suggest it since somebody else has control of your prim allotment/usage. Even automated rentals can be plagued by bugs and such.

(2. Do most product developers typically host their service/game/product themselves on their own land?) I do. I am in the midst of scripting a decent vendor that looks the way I want and does what I want. After that I can make stuff.

A low-prim vendor is really great for saving prims, perhaps THE best way to do so. Unless, of course, you want to put that brobdingnagian dirigible in your showroom to show off.

I looked into this and your right, there does seem to be a hole in the market. There is lots of choice if you want a house or to run a shop. But where do you go if you want to set up a game or some other distraction?

I'm trying renting. I've rented commercial space in the Jedi Sim, New Holstice. I told the landlord that I would be developing things there. So far its worked quite well. The theme is a droid junk yard so I can leave my various experiments around and it doesnt look out of place. People come by to see how I'm progressing. Of course I do have to go eslewhere if I dont want interuptions :)

I know I've got a fair bit of land but I tend to use a particular corner of my home as a scripting and building space. There are currently a wide variety of wildly exciting plywood cubes with various scripts in them littering the the landscape!

Once projects are complete then I'll keep copies of the scripts and if appropriate the objects and tidy up - only way to stop them proliferating out of control. Stuff that's going for sale then goes into vendors or similar (some of the scripting I do is specifically commissioned for others so I don't sell it).

Again I have the space for a shop, and also sell stuff via other places - but if you want somewhere to set your stuff up for sale SLB and SLEx are obvious choices, one prim for the server somewhere isn't hard even on a 512sqm plot. I run a shop and have space - IM me for details and you can always cruise around the various malls etc. looking for other spaces and other deals.

I recently bought the plot next to my home 512 mostly for the prim allowance - although a bit of extra space is nice as well. I have a little showroom and I also wanted a little space to landscape and walk around in and shoot things.

I found that even with my showroom being very simple, I kept bumping into the upper prim limit by accident; I ended up removing all of the decorative features on my land, and why should I have to live in a bare lot just because I like to build things with more than a couple of prims sometimes?

It's more peaceful than working in sandboxes. It's quite empty around my home area and most of the really annoying crappy builds have vanished. For an extra $5 a month, which is really very little, it's definitely worth it. In fact, I might buy a little more.

Yup. I build far too much rubbish to have it sitting around. At one time I'll have maybe one or two demos of a project I'm currently interested in rezzed for people to play with - the rest is in the showroom.

I don't build for sale; a few items have a nominal cost if they took me a long time to do, but mostly I put them in freebie cubes if I think anyone might want them.

Hi,

I rent private sandboxes - they are in the sky and are lag-free as a result. Rates usually start at 200/week but the grand opening rate is 150/week.

The advantage is, as you say, you can leave your things there and not have to worry about a cleanup. In addition, you don't have to be concerned about prying eyes since you're often completely alone because the sandboxes are about 250m-350m in the sky.

Rentals are picking up and I may add new sandboxes on another property soon.

How big are they? How many prims can one put onto one?

I have a lab about 300m up above my store. I do most of my small prim (100 prims or less) building there.

If it's a really large build (in size or prims) I go to a sandbox in bretton. Usually no one is there and the guy who does the cleaning stops to check if you're still there or not before returning your stuff.

The size of the sandbox is limited only by the size of the property. I provide a basic sandbox that is 30mx30m - it has a floor and two walls. You can expand if you like; however, you expand using your prim allocation and you must stay within the property lines.

The sandbox includes 100 prims and the weekly rate is L$225 with a minimum of 1 week and a maximum of two weeks. Large builds are permitted, no weapons - the ony restriction is that you don't live in the sandbox since this is a commercial property.

I'm going to have some more sandboxes in about 2 weeks. You'll be able to select how many prims you want based on L$/prim/period.

The property is located in Cristat - I don't have the rentals open now but let me know if you're interested and I'll set it up. Check my profile for my store in Cristat - the sandboxs will be located above the property at around 300m.
