I'd like to make an object that displays a different texture depending on an avatar's online status. Problem is, I don't know what function checks the online status of an avatar. Does one exist?

llRequestAgentData(agent_key,DATA_ONLINE) will trigger a dataserver event returning a string "1" or "0". Cast it to an integer and test against TRUE.

I have absolutely no idea how to work with the dataserver. Can you give me some example code that shows me what I need to do?

There's a nice concise example on the wiki:
