Randomly generating "pretty" colours

Hi!

I have a number of particle scripts that use llFrand() to rapidly generate the x, y & z elements of the PSYS_PART_START/END_COLOR vectors. This works well and causes no problems.

I am now however looking to refine the process so that only attractive, "pretty" colours are generated, avoiding the murky browns, sickly greens and rabid reds etc.

One possible solution, it seems, is to pre-load a list with known desirable colour vectors & use llFrand() to extract one from the list. For this tho', I would be need a 'colour chart' displaying the vector for each colour ~ the task of converting from a standard RGB 0-255 to an SL RGB 0-1 sounds a little tedious, tbh, but I will do it if necessary and if nobody out there has already performed this task. So, if you have or know the whereabouts of a comprehensive chart of this type, please let me know!

Secondly, is the proposed solution of pre-loading a list with these vectors a workable and/or efficient one?

Do you have a better way, or any tips, for randomly generating certain 'desirable' colours?

I think that your idea of storing pre-made palettes of colors in a list is a good one. I you didn't feel like converting the RGB number ranges - you could always do it within the script. Just divide the '0-255' RGB value by 255 to get the '0-1' range value.

It might also be possible to generate some more pleasing combinations by using a few color theory guidelines. There are certain ways to combine colors on a color wheel that generally produce pleasing result. This might take a bit of imaginative scripting, something that is usually beyond my skills

Pre-loading your colors sounds like the best idea, especially since "pretty colors" are all in the eye of the beholder (and, beyond that, dependent upon the exact project).

RGB to Vector is actually a relatively simple task. I've got a quick-script somewhere that I use to do it. I'll see if I can't find it in my inventory and pass it when I'm next online.

One possible way would be to generate your colours in HSV rather than RGB, then convert them. Stick to high Value and Saturation and you'll get the brighter, more vibrant colours across hues. There is a standard function to convert to RGB - it should be doable in LSL, but I should test it properly before I post it here.

I can't find a script that was in a thread last year. It did a simple combination of just 3 values:

Any combination of those 3 will give you just the "pretty" colors.
