Pushing an object a certain distance?

Is there some way to calculate how much force I'd need to push an object a certain distance? Is this perhaps affected by buoyancy (and friction???) and whether I use applyimpulse or push object? Thanks.

Err, I should mention, if I use push object the object is going to be pushing itself, so there won't be the distance issue with push object.

why not use llMoveToTarget instead? might be an easier solution

Just in some cases, movetotarget won't suffice for what I'm doing

maybe these two links will help you, or point you in the right direction. I do not know anything about llPushObject, just stumbled over the information ;)))

Sure it will, just move in 50m increments (unless you're moving a massive object anyway). Or you could use llApplyImpulse: http://lslwiki.net/lslwiki/wakka.php?wakka=llApplyImpulse
Or even the vehicle motors: http://lslwiki.net/lslwiki/wakka.php?wakka=vehicles

and you may or may not need a primer on physics:
