Ok seriously, what happened to the old forum?

There was a nice thread there collecting peoples XML-RPC implementations. I was eyeing that to get a few hints on reasonable style for our automation stuff, but it seems to have walked.

Has anyone heard anything back yet from the Lindens?

Nope, nothing, nada. I think they are hiding until the fervor dies down.

Daniel admitted deleting it and that was the last we heard. He said they should be able to recover it, but obviously they can't because they don't use standard backups. Stupid Stupid.

Not Good.
06-28-2004 15:24
We've looked and looked, and haven't found an appropriate back-up copy of the scripting forum -- so the chances of any recovery are, at this point, exceedingly slim.

So it's gone, and I did it, and I'm very sorry about it. It was, without a doubt, the worst possible Forum to have this happen.

I'll be available from 9-11 PST tomorrow, in the Welcome Area, to accept your flogging and assorted abuse (Kelly and Dan have been giving it to me in-person since the beginning of this debacle, but you should all have a turn).

Mmmm. That's not good. :( Perhaps publishing your whereabouts is a bad plan?

Seriously though, not a terrific turn of events but we've all been there. Don't take too much abuse!

While we're on the topic, do we know if the Wiki is backed up regularly?

No flogging needed. We just wanted a status update. Cheers.

The question now Daniel, is will LL be making DAILY backups of the forums from now on?

Text compresses nicely, and this entire forum, all of them, could be backed up on a single CD easily.

It happened because the forums changed. Period. Every time the forums change, they get worse. Period. Put them back the way they were.

And have things break again? No thanks!

"An appropriate back-up copy"? Was there *any* back-up at all? Even a partial back-up would be better than nothing.

They have. I have lost things due to a database crash or something. I once logged on looking like the default "Ruth" av, which gave me the idea of "shemaling" it for a while. Thank god I had other copies of my shape lying around.
I also lost a bunch of parts from Daitenshi Kato's robot av :(
When I try to wear it I get "Clothing/Body Part missing from database" I did report it a long time ago, forgot what they said.

This is kind of depressing. The SL system is largely documented by users, and a good chunk of that documentation had been destroyed.

I've made enough bad mistakes of my own that I really can't be unforgiving. But I think a good way to compensate for this setback would be for LL to improve the resources for SL developers. One way would be to build a real knowledge base rather than depending on contributions to a forum. Another would be to hire the LSL Wiki to upgrade the LSL documentation.

I forgive the Daniel Linden :D Each person learns the backup lesson in their own special way. My way was deleteing a months work of LabVIEW code.

What motive would there be, since SL users are already doing it for free?

Documentation has always been the lowest priority for the Lindens. I don't foresee that changing any time soon.

I was just suggesting it as a way to help compensate for the forum erasure. But they might be less likely to suddenly delete tons of documentation and sample code if they saw it as a serious investment of their own. The Lindens sporadically seem to try to encourage development of sophisticated content through contests and other events. I think they'd be helping themselves by helping developers create the content that sells their service. But I understand no one ever wants to spend money on support unless there's obvious revenue attached to it.

Anyway, all I really had in mind was them giving Ezhar or some other wiki uber-geek an island or something to stick the current info into the LSL help file.
