VNC viewer function?

Does anyone know of a way to get VNC to work within a script? I'm rather new to LSL, so please forgive my ignorance of any current functions that would allow VNC to work in a script.

Also, can you write your own libraries and place them within a script? For instance, if I were looking to import a Java library into my object, is that possible?

Thanks!

Hi, Jer, welcome to the forums!

VNC as in remote control (RealVNC)? It would depend on how/what you wanted to use it for, and in any case it would be very indirect, via php communication to a VNC service or something. If you are looking to display and control a remote screen by putting VNC into a script in a prim, ummmm .... someone cleverer will have to come along to help with that. My gut says, no.

Java libraries? Keep in mind that LSL scripts currently have 16K total memory, and no real linker. So no, at this time, no Java.

I say "at this time", because a project to replace native LSL scripting with a MONO backend and LSL (and, ultimately, other) frontends is in beta test now. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Mono

Memory will bump up to 64K with Mono. It will be a while before thisis released, though. I don't know whether anyone has been pushing for eventual Java support.

Describe what you mean by "VNC to work with/in a script".

It's coming sooner than people think. Try end of June at the latest ^.^

I already have very complex items running full Mono and they work great. Been a lot of fixing going on over on the beta grid. :) As well, did you see the video?

Thanks everyone!

Basically, I want a VNC display (no control) within a prim through a script. Much like a video display, but showing what is on the screen of another computer. I found someone that says they managed to do it, but they no longer have the viewer in life. It was Dalien at http://daltonic.blogspot.com/2007/07/vnc2sl-technology-preview.html.

I'm trying to figure out how he did it, since he doesn't have the viewer himself.

Another thought: Would the HTML in a parcel work? Does anyone know if it supports Java?

I'm reasonably sure that it doesn't. It's too early for me to go through all my messy unorganized bookmarks to find it for you, but if I remember correctly there's information about what you can and can't do with that on the Second Life blog.

Basically, he is using some kind of "snapshot" server which takes the state of your desktop, as imaged through the VNC display protocol to his own backend server, which is streaming the snapshots live.

Note that, in his case, the screen image on the prim updates every 60 (SIXTY) seconds.

If you want to do something similar, you will need to make your own VNC-to-streaming-video server (or obtain one... probably he's the only one who's made one), then you can just follow his directions, but point the parcel media stream to your server.

Thanks again! I think I may have found something that will do it, but it will require some hacking. But at least you got me going on the right road!

I have read in the Wiki that there are plans to bring VNC to the world in one form or another.. I think it would be a great idea, should any LL developers be reading this. ^_^

Where did you read that?
