Are there any samples anywhere of LSL scripts using httprequest to call a .NET web service? I'd like to see a sample of both the LSL and the corresponding .NET web method.

I'm sure there is someone out there who has, but most folks use more common/popular php scripts on their webserver back end. Is it an absolute requirement than .NET be used in your particular app?

No, it is not absolutely essential - but the server is w2k3 / IIS and all of the rest of the application is .NET. So it is certainly preferable.

However, in looking at some other resources, it appears that SOAP messages will be too big for the body limits of llHTTPRequest and the http_response event.

All you need to do is set up a page to receive a POST from LSL and then to send XML-RPC to LSL. If you're familiar with .NET, such shouldn't be a problem for you.

Thanks, Kenn - I'll check out the xml-rpc options.

At home I've got some examples of LSL speaking with an ASP backend (old ASP, not .NET) if that would help you.

Milambus, that would be great. Can you paste into a notecard or post here?

Good luck with XML-RPC. I don't think anyone is using it to any great extent. (Let the flame begin) The LL support for it is practically non-existent, the reliability is poor and the possible lag for delivery is unlimited.

Yeah, SOAP is unusable due to XML bloat for http. One needs to use a more RESTfull approach.

I think you're getting XML-RPC mixed up with receiving e-mail from the web. E-mail from the web can delay up to 12 hours. I've never had an incoming XML-RPC take longer than 5 seconds...and use it extensively.

XML-RPC looks to be going the way of the DODO...

I had lots of problems with the reliability of the XML-RPC near the beginning of it's introduction. Maybe people are not using it as much now and the traffic has decreased.

The worry I have now is that it has been stated by the Lindens that the XML-RPC functionality relys upon a single server and is not distributed to the Sim machine like the http request functionality is. The problem in the beginning was that all XML-RPC went through that one machine and it was being overloaded. It is still on one machine today , althought at some point that machine was upgraded a bit to handle the traffic a bit better.

The biggest worry is that XML-RPC, while IMHO should be the way of the furture (typed data through well formed XML), looks to be on the future chopping block. According to the Lindens, they have made the decision to put their eggs in the http basket and as in many areas, who knows when it ends up going away without notice or maybe they will just not continue to upgrade that box or whatever, but the future is just too iffy for me to go down the XML-RPC road.
