Is it possible for a script to prevent, detect, or force someone to stop recording a video using the SL client? I'm going to be streaming some copyrighted content through the video system on my property, which i have a license to do... but if anyone can just come by and record a video of it... then it can't be done. I would hope that LL was wise enough to program the client to at least not record the video being displayed on the screen for the user when they do a video capture. otherwise anyone could just come steal your video and re-encode it to use on their own.

Set Rescale video and stretch your screen a little.
Any video captured would have a lower frame rate and would be distorted.

is that going to hurt the way it looks when playing back for anyone in the vicinity?

The answer is no. You can try to find ways to make it less desirable, but if they can see it, they can video it.

If you have access to the play back scripts then you could just set it to play only for directly specified Users using the PARCEL_MEDIA_COMMAND_AGENT flag?
