Sorry to sound so nOObish, but I've been hunting for something like this for days, and really have no idea if such a thing exists...
Basically, I want to put some form of a forcefield around a skybox, like the 'do not pass' fields on land lots, but I want my land itself to be accessible to anyone. The skybox itself I'd like to set to allow entrance on a set named basis only...or really, anything like this that might work.
Any suggestions or ideas where I could find something like this, or even what it might be called?

You can use a sensor to scan for AV's within the immediate area. If they are not on the Allowed list warn them and then teleport them home.

Yeah, they're not really all that complex to write. A friend wanted her work platform and private skybox protected but had a store at ground level so she obviously couldn't use the banlines so I whipped up a system for her. Then another friend and I had trouble with strangers just popping into our homes so I coded a more polite version to handle home security in a residental sim which uses an escalating response system to deal with intruders. It works quite well, most people don't bother to return after their first strike gets them ejected from the parcel.

I was going to make such a system, but I found one for sale so comprehensive in its feature list that there seemed little point in trying to duplicate it.

There are many excellent ones already in existence. Search for security in find places, or go to www.slexchange.com or www.slboutique.com and see what is available. Of the two I own psyche ?sp? security is the most versital and will do everything you asked for and more.

Thanks alot for the help everyone, great suggestions! It is indeed less fun to buy something then to code it yourself, but I'm still learning by a long shot....so far everything I've coded from scratch has been pretty hairy, so I'm mostly just looking for something to get buy for the time being while I devise strange contraptions in my lab!
oh and thanks for the SLboutique tip, I hadn't come across this place yet (we're talking primo newbie here!)

If you want a force-field people can bounce off of, you can make transparent prims that go phantom when allowed people approach but remain solid for strangers. That would be the nice way to do it. You can then teleport strangers home if they bypass the field.
If you want to grief random aviators, you can just teleport people without having anything for them to bounce off of, as suggested above, but personally, I'm just not rude enough to recommend that.

The disadvantage with the transparent prims - I like to build tall/big things. This means sometimes I like to put my view way back, as far as I can, to get a perspective on the build. Whenever I have had the transparent prims up, I forever have a problem where I need transparent visible on, then those prims get in my way.
What I really wish I could have is something that just makes people go around my skybox. I don't like the "pushing away" thing, but there is just no other way available to keep people out of my build area.
Right now my roof is open. I try to be nice to the few people that fly in an land on my "platform", but it really is a nuisance when you are trying to build and you have to say "please go away so I can work" (which of course is what I do, as politely as I can).
The worst one was today - I am just starting to work with physical prims, so someone flies in, lands IN my partical stream to the object I'm working on, asks "whatcha doin", and proceeds to start pushing the prims on the floor around. I had a very hard time being polite.
If we could have a way to just make people go around our places, we wouldn't need the security measures that so many people consider rude.

Here's a thought....make your own banlines! (can't take credit for the idea.. Ordinal Malaprop did it better.. and funnier. get some of those huge prims. Get ones that TOTALLY FIT INSIDE YOUR LAND... (no need to annoy the neighbors)... now get ahold of the "No Entry" texture. (make one if you have to). Now.. around your skypad.. make a box of fake banlines. Script them (the 20x20 may be the limit here) so that on collission, it IM's the intruder with the standard banline type message. "Can't enter parcel, not on access list." or somesuch. Have your script record like 10 attempted entries (collisions) and then send the user home. That gives them a visual incentive to go away.. (just fly around) and doesn't subject them to any action based on "accidentally" crossing into your airspace. (nice to pilots).

Security with a key
04-12-2007 10:06
I am looking for a similar device. Would like to be able to allow access into a skybox if the avi has a key in thier inventory. Is there a script or gadget around to do that will do that.

Is there a script or gadget around to do that will do that. there is unfortunately no way (that I now of) to detect what items an AV is wearing. you can see IF they are wearing any, but not what they are. same goes for scripted attached items, you can detect if they are wearing something with script in it, but not what it is. I dont think you can use a script to check someones inventory for something either. however, you can make a cheeky hack that makes it seem like items attached to an AV are being detected... add a script to your "key" that announces itself on channel "x" with a specific pass phrase that the "lock" (or door, or whatever) listens for, in a timer loop type thing. keep the time intervals fairly long, and follow the tips about the "listen" event on the LSL wiki to prevent prevent causing too much lag I'd link to the page, but it seems to be broken right now, and the lsl wiki mirror site's search function doesnt work.

My only comment to this is that if you do use anything that utilizes Teleport Home, give them warning because it can really make some people mad. Most SLers will heed a friendly warning, but if you just boot them home instantly, they might not take that lightly.
I'm fond of using the useless floating hangar near my store as an example because they've caused quite a few of my demo ships to poof on people and get shot home just becasue they flew too near. Go fig...flying vehicle....hangar...why would they want to fly close to it I wonder...
I finally got it taken care of through the Lindens so now it only does it if they actually cross over to the hangar itself, because previously it did it no matter where they entered the parcel at...and since they bought this parcel right next to my already existing store and did this, I was quite po'd.

Do you have to own the land to use these systems, or can you use them on rented land?

many security systems will work on rented land if the landlord requires you to be a member of a group and you have permissions within that group to eject people from your land. Usually, you have to set the group of the security system to the group that is provided by the landlord.
Many security systems can be copied .. thus, a landlord, who probably has a security system, might be able to install one and set one up for you.
You could also ask your prospective landlord about security systems ... they probably have been asked about it before and can give you a quick answer.
