Scripts hate me

I told my landlady that my door lock was broken. She quickly came and worked on it while it was away.

(I have had pervs come in when there was no lock.)

It still didn't work for me. I would give chat commands with, seemingly, no respons. She replaced the script with an older, very reliable script (commands in open chat). Same thing.

She came while I was home. She could see the commands in chat when I typed them, and they were working. I could not see. Neither could my alt.

So she just removed the door and I installed my own, which works. It seems to use very similar chat commands (open chat, not a channel).

What the heck is this about??? Scripts hate me.

Obviously differences in owner access. Why? No way to tell without seeing the scripts.

For what it's worth, there's absolutely no way that a lock is going to keep anyone out of your space. People can always see in, and almost always can sit their way through a wall if they want to. Locks are nice, but don't count on them to keep anyone but a newbie out.

Yeah, locking doors are stupid and a waste of server resources. People all over SL use them, but they're ineffective. If you want to keep someone out, setup an access list on your land, and use that instead. It doesn't eat sim resources, and it's more effective at keeping people out (although in most cases one can still cam in).

Scripts sense fear. You have to be absolutely calm and peaceful when you deal with them, and never provoke them.

And they all belong to the same union. Offend one script and they'll all go out on strike against you and shut down the server on their way out the door.

And you are complaining? Some people spend good money to get pervs to come over.
Sheesh.

Ok, yeah. I know that they will only keep out newbies and technically clueless AVs. (Plenty of ppl who have been around for a while don't know the tricks.) I'll settle for that. Not my sim. Access list impractical. I can, and do, get people banned.

Ok, it slows the sim slightly. All of the houses have locks, installed by the land owner. She obviously isn't worried.

A professional car burglar can always get into my car. But if it is locked, with a Club on the wheel, and a alarm sticker on the window, he is going to go to another car. (Naw, I don't keep the alarm on. Just in certain situations, a few times a year.)

Same with my SL house. At least it gives me time to activate my killer bees and rottweiler. Hehe.

If you are not bothered by intruders, fine. I am. I don't want some ***-**** pervert with his **** out coming in my house.

Anyway, this same script apparently works for every other tenant. They have been in use for a couple of years with no problems. Whatever. I have my own door now and the lock works.

Yeah, and /me suspects

means she was, in fact, seeing instant messages or llOwnerSay() coming from the door.

To whom does the door actually belong? And if it belonged to her and she then gave it to you, did you try resetting the script?

It's her door. Same script as in, maybe, 30 other houses. None of those ppl own the doors.

It sure sounds like the script is set to only listen to the owner. That or maybe there's some sorta access list that defines who it will respond to and you're not on it.

Of course now that you have your own door in place this is an academic question, although it would still be nice to know the answer.

There is an access list. I saw the owner add my name in open chat. I believe she reset the script too, and it wasn't designed to be owner only, because it works for everyone else. /me pouts

I think that could be the group owner bug. Scripts work for group owners when they are there but they stop when the owners go away. It happens when the object is not set to the land's group. The bug is http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-3145

Again, this doesn't explain why two separate scripts that work for dozens, maybe hundreds, of other people don't work for me. By the way, there are two separate houses. Neither lock works.

I might mention that my alts and I moved from two other houses in the same sim to these two houses. The locks on the other two houses worked fine. (I know because I locked them every night.) These two don't. It's all one big parcel on one sim.

I'm going with the "scripts sense fear" hypothesis.

Well, if that bug really is the problem, then it could easily affect any door that the owner simply forgot to set to group when she installed it. I can't count the number of times I have set the wrong group on something when I've been in a hurry. You just had the bad luck to get hit twice.

I think Rolig and Cherise were on to something... the differences between the sets of doors would probably be whether the owner and/or set group was the same...
