Is there any reasonably simple way, if I make a texture in Gimp or Photoshop using a 100x100 grid and make a note of the appropriate points, to express "the bit of the surface I enclose if I draw a straight line through the following coordinates in this order" in terms lsl will understand? It's pretty obvious how to do it for squares and right-angle triangles, but not otherwise, at least not to me.

If, as I rather fear will be the case, I can't, can anyone direct me to something a non-mathematician might understand that would help me write formulae to describe shapes I might want to use on textures for people to click?

Sounds like you want to know if a point is in a polygon.

Perhaps /54/82/211000/1.html will be of use.

Searching this forum for

point polygon might yield some more useful threads.

Googling for

point in polygon

might yield code that could be modified to serve.
