I'm new and there are a few things that I'd love to do. I'd like to have a flickering fire, lights that turn on and off and music. Are there simple samples that show us how to do this without having to learn the entire language? Thanks in advance for any help.

There are some simple scripts in your library, both in the scripts folder and (I think) in some or all of the scripted objects.
There is also the scripting library here which contains some useful scripts - although not all are simple. Between them they should give you pointers for the sorts of things you're looking for and some idea of how people try to do them, so you can learn in chunks. Alternatively, if you have specific needs I or several others will either code them for you (possibly for a price), and again I or others on the Scripting Mentors list can give you pointers. I, for one, generally won't right code, but I'm happy to give you pointers the right way to specific functions. Finally of course, once you dip your toes this list is a good place to ask questions - we're pretty friendly. |

I've noticed that when I click something that's scripted, it says right click for menu. Nothing is there. What does that mean? Where can I find the scripts for these things to copy? And what is usually charged to get someone to do it for you? I'm new so I'm poor too. LOL! Thanks for everything. |

I loved your reply. Thanks for telling me where to look. I've noticed that when I click something that's scripted, it says right click for menu. Nothing is there. What does that mean? It's a silly thing it says - it means the pie menu, which will, for example, have touch and/or pay highlighted if the script is appropriate for them. I think, however, it ALWAYS says right click for menu in scripted items even if it's not relevant. Where can I find the scripts for these things to copy? If it's something that you've got permissions for then right-click and choose edit. Then click on the more button if it's showing. Then the contents tab. The script(s) are in there. If the script is full perms you'll be able to open it and look at how it's done (I think that's the case for all library objects that are scripted, but not 100% sure). In items others have built it's MUCH more unlikely they'll let you have full access to their scripts. And what is usually charged to get someone to do it for you? I'm new so I'm poor too. It all depends. If you want a really simple script quite a few of us will give them away free. Something simple that I've already got or that takes a couple of minutes to write I'll usually do that way. Some other things, well I'm not the most expensive person to buy from, but I got paid L$10,000 for a bit of custom scripting a while ago. That's still stupidly cheap by RL standards - US$40 or so. I've got a script that I sell (just the script) that I've made appreciably more than that by selling to people because it happens to meet a very specific need. LOL! Thanks for everything. You're welcome, we're here to help after all. |
