heightfeet = size.z * 3.28083;
is a calculation in a height measure script I found the other day. I know that the bounding box size is only useful for height, but I wondered where the constant came from. Also, does anyone know whether there are any convertors for the other AV variables that could allow me to guage the 'real' size of an AV? Even if only on my own avatar.
Not exactly a script question, but I thought you might know.

Doc, all SL length measurements are in meters. There are 3.28083 feet in 1 meter. This even applies to co-ordinates! So the point MySim (13,17) is exactly 1m, or 3.28083' away from MySim(13,1 .

You may be relizing, SL av's on average are taller then normal humans.

I often get the feeling that 1 "SL" meter is less than 1 RW meter... My 24m long boats often feel smaller than RL equivalents :/ I'd say it feels like 10 SL m = 6 RL m.
Note: it's only a feeling, based on how I perceive buildings, vehicles, movement, etc... in SL. Note2: being 5'2" in RL probably doesn't help.

From: DoctorMike Soothsayer I know that the bounding box size is only useful for height... Actually, from what I've tested... it would seem that the bounding box(at least as far as collisions are concerned) doesn't even contain/use the AV's height - An arrow shot above the head of a tiny anim-overridden knee-high AV will still trigger a collision even if it's a couple meters over the AV's visible head... Anyhow, DoctorMike, check that thread I linked to, I also was attempting to find the actual size/dimensions of an AV by checking where things collided with them - AFAIK, there's no way to find how thick or skinny, or really ANY properties of your AV except height. Heck, we can't even make LSL tell us the gender of an AV.

That's because anims are client side. They alter your appearance if they're the tiny anim (squashing you up, tweaking arms and legs and so on) but only for the viewer(s). The server side still 'knows' how tall you are from the stand-with-arms-out starting pose.

More importantly, to the sim the shape, position and rotation of your av's bounding box is uneffect by animations. To the sim you are always standing with your arms at your side (except maybe when your av is sitting or some other specail condition indicated by a default animation, but this is unlikely).

My Av is tiny my SL standards (5' 2" in bare feet) and most people tower over me. But when I put on a tall shape like everyone else, I don't look bigger. Instead, everyone ELSE looks smaller. I guess we all perceive the world relative to ourselves. (Bet there is a good scientific paper in there somewhere....)

if you *really* want to measure your av's height, you're best off figuring it out using a cube like a measuring stick. The values returned that indicate the bounding box of an av are....well....wrong. The z value measures from about the eyes to the ankles.

My AV varies from Tiny (<2') to a couple of 7 foot monsters... no over-sized tricks but I've tuned one about as tall as you can go. I haven't noticed the world changing that much, but that's probably because I'll change my AV two or three times a minute sometimes... I've gotten used to judging the size of the SL world by the people around my character, rather than my character himself.
