The subject of other languages besides LSL comes up every now and then. It can be a somewhat contentious discussion at times and also depends on where the language is going to be applied. But I came across one the other days that is both overly simplistic but can also be used to create the complex. Mainly it is just an awesome amount of fun to see what all you can squeeze out of the limited number of commands. Scratch was developed by the MIT Education lab and is targeted at children starting at age 8. That's right, let's teach them while they are young! Actually I am walking my daughter through it to see how she does. But to heck with the young ones, give it a try for your own self. Who knows maybe you can discover your inner child. http://scratch.mit.edu/

Thank you for this! I am now addicted to playing with this =D No particle support, though... that'd be neat. Just an alpha version, though, maybe eventually it will support most LSL features..who knows =D Anywho, thanks again!

Hmm. Put flashy colors on it and suddenly it is usable? I don't know. Looks like just another Visual Basic/Visual C++ or whatever. I've never seen the need to talk down to kids or anyone else to teach them to program. I prefer to present it like it is, though putting it in simple and logical terms, and I find that the student tends to reach upward instead of needing to be reached down to if they are at all interested. People have more potential than we give them credit for; it is usually more in the areas of motivation and attitude that there is difficulty.
I learned to program at the age of five, and I've started teaching children at ages not much older than that. This Scratch thing is no miracle IMO. Its more like eye candy for parents and teachers; they're really the ones that need the, "feel good."

Just happens to be fun, too, in my opinion, and makes creating silly little scripts very fast and easy. I wouldn't generally use it to create a serious script, but for fun little toys and whatnot, it's quick, easy, and fun.

I'd say "Those who don't understand LOGO are condemned to reinvent it." except this makes LOGO look like PL/I.

I didn't miss the point entirely. I was more responding to the general idea of the creation. Sorry. Had to rant a little and the general talk-downedness that's so prevalent these days. Yeah, could be fun to mess with I guess. Interesting that someone's tried to apply it to SL.

It looks great! It also looks like Automator on the Mac, and Chipwits, a tile-programmable robot simulator on the early Mac. Automator: http://www.apple.com/applescript/automation/automator/index.htmlChipwits: http://www.richardsnotes.org/archives/2005/03/29/chipwits/
