Get inventory from root prim

Is there any way a script in a child prim can see what is in the inventory of the root prim?

The application is intended to allow owners to drop textures into an object and have these textures available to be used by a couple of the child prims.

better approach:

scripts in the root prim can use llSetLinkTexture to apply textures to child prims in a linkset.
