"Walking" statues -- feasible with LSL?

Since discovering Second Life a couple of weeks ago, I have been playing around with the idea of making an exhibit of "living" statues. (I picture being inside a 3-D reproduction of a Salvador Dali painting, but with the soft watch ticking, an Elephante-Giraffe walking around, etc.) I am an experienced programmer, and I think I am making good progress learning LSL, but I wonder if I'm missing something.

I have managed to do some simple experiments such as getting an animal to wiggle its foreleg using llSetRot(), but thus far my efforts have been less than satisfactory -- update rate is *very* slow and variable, averaging a frame every 2-3 seconds. Am I missing a fundamental technique for efficient animation of prims, or am I simply attempting to do something that is beyond the capabilities of the scripting system as it exists?

getting smooth animation in a scripted object is indeed very difficult. there are some tricks, most of these involving things like llSetAlpha-ing between two or more "frames", but in the sim "The Future" you can see some examples of scripts that hold several frame and animate between them using SetPos as well.

If you are looking for lots of complicated movement in a human (or human-esque) figure then you might be able to create Avatars and custom animations - of course then you would need residents to populate your art pieces. Would be kind of fun to walk up to a piece of art and become a PART of it instead of just being the observer, tho.

I have been toying with this idea for a while, maybe we can get together and brainstorm some ideas if you are interested.

Wow! This is my dream too. I can't wait to see it come true. Good Luck to you and let me know when I can see it.

Jeffery Gomez has done some great work on this already.
