What is scripting used for and is there a simple and complete scripting guide online?

I understand its for many different things, but, I really want to learn so that I can actually do something with this like many other people have.....

any help would be appreciated...

Scriptings used for anything and everything, from vehicles to say scripts.

The best place to start, or so I've been told, is the LSL Wiki.

Hey, welcome to SL!

Ya, scripting can accomplish a lot of things. It is the difference between a plane model and one that actually works. To help get you started, folks usually suggest trying a couple of things depending on your learning style. You may want to take a look at the LSL scripting wiki, which is a big compendium/knowledge base on how to use each of the functions etc. There are a few good tutorials on getting started there as well.

The other big approach would be to get your hands on as many scripts as possible, open them up, and begin to learn how they work by tearing them apart and rebuilding them yourself. An inworld search on YadNi's Junkyard will lead you to an enormous freebies repository. Many of the items there are scripted; a few of the boxes contain nothing but scripts.
